Cell Phone Theft in America Exists - Here's How to Avoid It
When you think of crime in America, what is the first thing that comes to mind? For us, we often think of burglaries, assaults, and other serious matters that the news often portrays on television. What the news fails to mention, more often than not, is the rising amount of cell phone theft that occurs each and every day.
As more and more consumers ditch their flip phones for iPhones and Androids, the black market’s demand for these personal computers has skyrocketed. In 2014, an estimated 2.1 million cell phones were stolen in the United States alone. In aggregate, cell phone theft represents 31% of total crime.
These numbers are simply staggering. The scarier part of all of this is what the thieves are actually taking. Although smart phones can sell for hundreds of dollars, thieves are in it for the data that is stored on your phone. This includes anything from photos to videos, contacts, music, apps, and… banking information.
Don’t worry, there is a light at the end of the tunnel of all of this. According to studies, 44% of all cell phone theft is from people leaving their cell phones unguarded in a public place. Therefore, we as a society can eliminate nearly 1 million stolen phones per year just by being a little bit smarter with where we leave our phones out. As our customers will attest, there are not many things greater than having that sense of security when you are at a beach, pool, park, or other densely populated area.
